The global reggae community is mourning the sudden passing of legendary Jamaican musician Stephen “Cat” Coore, co-founder and musical director of the iconic band Third World. Coore died on Sunday evening at the age of 69, according to a statement released by his publicist and later confirmed by his family.
Born on April 6, 1956, Coore dedicated more than five decades to shaping the sound and spirit of reggae music. A gifted guitarist and cellist, he was revered not only for his technical brilliance but for his deep musical knowledge and visionary leadership. Before forming Third World, Coore was among the early members of Inner Circle, later departing to co-found Third World alongside keyboardist Ibo Cooper.
Under Coore’s musical direction, Third World became pioneers of reggae-fusion, blending reggae with soul, funk, pop, and rock in a way that helped propel Jamaican music onto the global stage. The band earned international acclaim with timeless classics such as Now That We’ve Found Love, 96 Degrees in the Shade, and Try Jah Love, cementing their status as one of Jamaica’s longest-running and most successful bands.
Coore’s contributions to music and culture were formally recognized by the Government of Jamaica, which awarded him the Order of Distinction for his outstanding impact on the creative arts and Jamaican cultural heritage.
